The important thing about the height of a shade is that it has a nice proportion when placed on the table or floor lamp base. A general rule of thumb is that the shade should be slightly wider than the lamp base and about two-thirds as high. The shade style should generally match the style of the base, so pair traditional with traditional and so on.
