Make a note of what type of lining your lamp shade has, each one is specifically designed to create different effects. Hardback lampshades have a stiff but bendable material, such as plastic, backing the fabric outer layer. This helps the shade maintain its form. A reflective gold or silver lining is sometimes used, particularly with darker lampshades. Reflective lining serves two functions, preventing light from being absorbed by the dark material and hiding the bright spot that can be caused by the bulb. Other fabrics, such as linen, are also used to further diffuse light and prevent shadows.
